With the way Your Wellington is developing, it became obvious that I needed a site to introduce myself to people who didn’t know me and what my thoughts are for Wellington.
Above you see the things I stand for. I won’t go into specifics just yet—it’s more important that you know for now where this thinking has come from.
Free wifi, which will help us on our way to becoming an even greater, international, creative city.
Job creation, which will come from my technology platform. So far, I’m the only mayoral candidate who has talked about this. Why? It’s a tough issue to discuss, especially with our unemployment having gone up 1½ per cent between 2008 and 2009.
I’ve been totally consistent, long before I even decided to stand for mayor, that certain assets are owned, and must remain owned, by the people. Water is one of them, and I’ve campaigned and met with groups to ensure water is not privatized.
I’ve talked about the environment long before it was trendy. In 2003, I hooked up Lucire, a fashion magazine I own, with the United Nations Environment Programme, and helped ecological and environmental causes. And this city will have a comprehensive environmental programme under my leadership—one that anticipates, rather than follows, the trends.
And when you’ve co-written a book about transparency, that shows some commitment. I plan to put city meetings online for everyone to view and comment on—no more heading to the Council to give your views, because your voice will be heard, even when you comment on a blog. Your Wellington is a prototype of what can happen.
This mayoral election is not about élites or the same-again policies. It’s about building a Wellington that you want.
